i have a dell dimenstion l800r and want to put windows200 on it but still have winme... i dont wana reformat and start over so is there a way to put win2000 while win me is still on... and i hope this will not kill my warantee with dell..

It shouldn't hurt you warranty. All ya have to do is create a second partition after your WinME partition and install Win2K on it.. Win2K will do everything for ya, like add the boat loader and stuff. Its pretty easy to do and I'm sure once ya run Win2K for a while you'll never use WinME again..

how would i creat a partation and once i do install win2000 will i be able to pick winme or win2000 rigth when the system boots... and yes i called dell thay say if i have a problem in win2000 thay wont support me only windows me is supported,,..,

using partition magic i will be able to make the partition while winme is still installed..??? and do i buy partition magic how much is it for... and is windows 2000 really that that good i use my system for some games internet and word ...

Yes partition magic will create a new partition for ya from within WinME without detroying any data.. And Yes Win2K is much better then WinME..

BTW, I think there are free programs to download to partition your drives so you won't have to spend $40 for PM.. Not sure what the apps are called though..

cool thanks..... but installing win 2000 will that mean setting up drivers etc or will it look to win me for set up... and will i be able to use my file from win me in win 2000

Win2k uses different drivers then WinME.. Win2k is built on NT and ME is built on 9X.. You'll be able to access all you drives from either OS inless you choose to convert the Win2K partition to NTFS..

After creating the new partition and installing, make sure you choose a New/Fresh Install (not the upgrade!). You'll also want to make sure to check the box so that the install will prompt you to choose a partition during the install.

For most programs, especially ones with variants for Win2K, or registry entries, you will need to reinstall them under Win2K to get it to run. Doing so really sucks up a lot of room. So when I did it, I knew I was going to use Win2K more than WinME, so I installed WinME and almost no programs under it and then installed Win2K and all my programs under that os.

You'll need to install drivers for all the hardware, make sure you use the Win2K versions and not the WinME versions.

ohhh one more thing under win2000 is it easy to set up a network to share cable connection, caz under win me its very easy with the internet sharing wizerd...

you can also just get another hardrive, but win2k in that drive and change the boot drive in the bios on a dell to boot in win2k from the 2nd hardrive
