How to set up a distributed comp network

I know this guy that is an utter asshole (he is my suitemate in college) and has a Wireless G router not 20 ft from my desk.... I have a Pocket PC and it has Wireless B... Now since I absolutely hate this guy with the fire of a thousand suns I would like to crack his WEP encryption since simply pushing reset is too easy.....

Any number of my friends also dislike this fellow so they want in... the question is how can I set up a distributed computing netwrok here on my college LAN that we can use to crack his encryption.

128 bit encryption will take you over 20 years with a normal PC to crack I think.

Have a look RC5-72 project which is (I think) trying to decrypt something encrypted using 72 bits or something like that.

If you mean ethically.... then perhaps, but this guy is a total dick...

I heard of one program completely can't remember the name right now... that will apparently do it quite quicky the isssue is that he doesn't actually use the wireless function that much (he has a laptop but it is hardwired) so not too many packets are being sent... He knows next to nothing about computers so he doesn't even turn it off....

Yes, ethically, among other things. You can't ask this for the same reason that you can't ask questions about how to pirate software and other media on these forums. What you do by yourself is up to you and we can't really tell you not to do it but all the projects here are based on useful, not destructive goals, and we choose not to devote effort to things that we think are wrong.

are you sure it will take only 20 years to crack 128bit?
i think i will be more.maybe wrong.

sorry buddy no help here.

but i say it will definately take you more money, effort, time to crack it than to reap its benifit.
so think some other way to getback at the wierdo....

No problem. Questions like this get asked from time to time. Usually it takes an "offense" or two for people to realize why we can't discuss it, whether or not we want to. We appreciate that you understand.

Umm, I believe that was more or less laid to rest in the other thread; was it not? How about we let it go.

Ok... if I wanted to distribute compute somehting else though anything really (I'm not looking for a step-by-step) what goes into it? Do any of you guys do distributed on a LAN level or anything? My friends and I have built 3 or 4 servers to use for game hosting on our college LAN and it would be interesting to see how to distribute anything amongst them...

you might search for things like beowulf, wolfpack, or with macs look on the apple forums -

but, like was said before a lot of time & effort goes into programming to take advantage of multiple machine configs so it's good to have a very good reason to do it - something that will save lives, do science, make money... or the investment will not be worth what you get out of it...

hmm.... i didn't realize it was quite that complex, will investigate Beowulf and wolfpack though
