How to send and recieve external mail thro' outlook

Ya yahoo has provided pop3 and smtp to me,Iam able to connect from my system which has dial-up,I configure my outlook with pop3 and smtp its working fine i,e iam able to recieve and send mail to all other external.
But iam unalbe to do the same thing with my client which is connected to dial up thro' proxy,Will i have to open any ports.
