e.g if the term im searching for exists as part of the folder name, then it not only finds the file i want, it also lists everything within that folder.

any way to specify to only look for files instead of folders?

You can arrange the search results by filetype, that'll display the folders & all the different files separately, after which you can filter the results further by clicking on the name column which'll then sort the results alphabetically. I'm assuming you've searched from explorer not the metro interface !

of course, i hate metro. problem is (i didnt mention this in op) is there's a bunch of files i'm looking for with different extensions and need to arrange by size (for what i'm doing it's easiest). all the other crap mixed in makes search unusable really.

I created a file InnerFile.txt, a folder "InnerFile", and a second file InnerFile\ContentFile.txt. Using filename:myFileName, File Explorer only returned the "InnerFile.txt" file and the InnerFile folder.

Searching for "InnerFile" alone added the "ContentFile.txt" file.

It's definitely not exactly what you asked for but hopefully that helps to a degree.
