hsf didnt make full contact w/the cpu, and it's fried (i smell the burnt ozone).

I bought it a month ago at Fry's. The return policy at Fry's is 15 days, so no go there.

How do I RMA at AMD? (It's a OEM chip-> no hsf)

It was User error, you burnt it yourself.

I see no reason why AMD should pay for your lack of knowledge & experience.

Maybe next time you'll be more carefull, chalk this one to gaining experience & take your loss like a man.

Umm, I've been buying Fry's OEM processors with the understanding that they come with a year warranty? Perhaps that is for the the cpu/mobo dealie of the week?

User error... RMAing it would be unethical in this situation... although, if I was in the same situation, I'd probably try to get it replaced for free too.

c'mon guys AMD isnt starving. from what i understand a vast majority of the $ we pay for a CPU is for research and design and not for the chip per se

My opinion has nothing to do with AMD's financial situation, it has to do with ethics, and my financial situation.

If you bought the CPU with a charge card, you might get an extended warranty. Some charge cards (American Express) will double the warranty up to one year on any product purchased with their card. Check your card.

Did you check the warranty at AMD's web site. I believe AMD only covers warranty on retail processors. If you bought a OEM processor your warranty is covers by the retailer. AMD does not cover OEM processor warranties. Thats the way I read it, but check for yourself.

The things are cheap, just get a new one. Use a thermal pad if you're worried about contact with the core.

btw-AMD will not support OEM processors. that's why it's OEM. if something happens, it's the responsibility of the reseller.

but that said, they will do a 1 time curtsey exchange. the new cpu will have no warrenty what so ever. BUT they don't have any 2400+ oem processors in stock. they have a 2200+. they won't give me a higher one since it is a curtesey for them to even to offer to exchange it.

I talked to Fry's. They said i can mail it back to them, and they'll mail me a new one. But i am not too confident on this.

What's your take?

screw that, i need the $80 or so dollars the 2400+ costs more than amd needs the $2 or so dollars to gimme a new CPU :)

if it's boxed cpu, yes amd takes care of that. but the stuff from fry's comes in a small plastic container barely bigger than the size of the chip.

Take the XP2200... if you don't want it, just sell it and buy another XP2400

is there a such thing as OEM boxed? doesnt OEM imply just the opposite: unboxed? i bought a 1700+. it was just the bare chip. it still had the 1 year warrenty

OEM are shipped from the factory in trays NOT boxes. The retailer provides warranty service NOT AMD. Some retailers used to offer 1 year warranty on OEM but I havn't seen that in a while. I'd take the 2200 and consider myself lucky.

Yea, ^ really. When you consider that you ruined the chip yourself, they are doing you a good turn to exchange it for a 2200+. You just fell in the sewer, and came up smelling of roses, jump on that as quickly as you can.
