How does one rid the desktop icons of the small arrows on the bottom of the icons on Win 98 SE & on WinXP? I have tried TweaakUI but to no avail.
Thanks

Whoa! It didn't work on either system? If it worked on the Win98 system but not the XP system I'd say make sure you have administrative privlages on the XP box. If it didn't work on either I'd say call an exorcist. :)

this worked for me under win2k. i haven't tried it in xp.

1. open up regedit
2. goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
3. goto lnkfile
4. delete the string value IsFile
5. close regedit, restart windows.

good luck!

A simpler way.

Regedit and go to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Lnkfile

and to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Piffile

In each of these folders the right hand pane has the "IsShortcut" String Value.
Right-click on it, select Rename, and change it to read "IsNotShortcut" (no quotes).
Close Regedit and reboot.

This way Programs that usually balk at not being able to identify it as a shortcut will not be affected.

Make sure to backup the Key before changing in case you want to revert back to the default.
Highlight Lnkfile\Piffile
Registry\Export Registry file
and save it as UndoShortCut.reg

That way all you have to do is double-click it to set the defaults back.

Although TweakUI does change the overlay, one of the updates on WindowsUpdate for Win98(SE) screws it up completely and you cannot use half the functionality in TweakUI (not to mention the update also seems to bork the Task Bar too).

A pity I couldn't figure out which one did it. The problem is it is one of the updates that cannot be uninstalled. So if you insist on changing the shortcut arrow and it means that much to you, reinstall.

If you (AndyHui) are referring to how the Quick Launch disappears and how you can't right-click it and how in Tools-->Folder Options you can't choose "View as a webpage" all you have to do is delete the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ClassicShell" I think most everyone knows that because it is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but if I can help a few people I don't mind typing it.

For WinXP, I used TweakXP and the arrows are gone.
For the Win98 Computer, TweakUI didn't work. I have uninstalled TweakUI and then reinstalled the proggie, but it still didn't work. I will try the registry tweaks mentioned above and let ya know.
Thanks

jarsoffart: No. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about something else that has nothing to do with QuickLaunch.
