Seems my back yard has ticks somewhere, but I'm not sure where. I found an engorged one on my dog yesterday, got it to release itself and flushed it. Let my dog out later on, he came back in with one crawling on his face. So he is getting them from the back yard somewhere. It is fenced in, but I have a large side yard where deer frequent and sometimes sleep. I rent the house, so I don't want to spend time completely getting ride of all the bushes/trees. I am moving out next May, so I want a quick fix that will last until winter. They can't survive the winter, so I'm hoping they don't reappear in the spring. I have been living in this house for over 2 years and never had a problem, but it seems like I do now. Are there any remedies to get rid of ticks in a yard? Any good sprays or other solutions that are safe for roaming dogs? Thanks for any help...

And for your troubles, a picture of my guy:

Negative depletion. Drag your dog all over the field, then remove and kill ticks. Repeat several cycles, until all ticks are removed from field.

I don't think they wander very far. Keep grassy areas mowed low throughout the season and if possible, get a fence to keep other critters from dragging them through your yard.

Go to a local co-op and get Hi Yield that contains Permethrin. Mix in a backpack sprayer and spray, works great on army worms too. It was used in the military to wash clothing in, then let air dry and then wear. No ticks, no chiggers...have been using a version of it my whole life. When you spray take care not to spray flowers that bees will get on. Don't want to kill the bees and many chemicals are toxic to them. Just spray the turf, tree trunk bases, even around the exterior of the house. Adhere to all warnings on the label.

Just get yourself a bottle of that Mosquito Barrier. Works even better for ticks. I spray around my house and any areas where the boys and dogs go early May. After the first or second round, they're gone and we don't see any for the rest of the year. I wish I had known about it sooner. There were times in Maine where I and my dogs would come in for the day and I'd have 2 or 3 on me, they'd have a dozen each. Disgusting little fuckers. With how serious Lyme is, you can't ignore them.

It's nice having chickens, guineas or turkey around to eat them, but then you're always constantly watching where you walk so you don't track avian shit into your house. Then there's the joy of taking care of them, replacing them when the coyotes come calling, or getting to hear the melodious sounds of nearby guineas first thing in the morning. Uh, no.

The garlic stuff is $20, silent, and doesn't need to be cared for. Wards off rabbits, deer, biting flies, ticks, and of course, mosquitoes. The garlic won't harm any beneficial insects like bees either. Pretty sure the variety of extracts from chrysanthemum kill insects in all but very low concentrations. Anything is better than organophosphates though. We need every bee we can get!

Also: diatomaceous earth is your friend. I'll dust around the house couple times throughout the spring/summer, maybe once more in the fall under porches or anywhere that looks sheltered from the weather. Mice will get ticks and then drop them off in or around your house when trying to find a place to stay warm. If they have to crawl through even a little of the DE though, game over. You can take a pinch of it and rub it into your dogs coat before you head to run, play, whatever. If there's any critters on the pup for a meal or a ride, that'll learn'em. An excruciating death via stab wounds and lethal dehydration: just what every tick and flea deserves.
