i would like to restore the machine cause after almost 2 years of heavy use its begin to slow down, just going through the thousands of songs in itunes the computer skips and restarting it up is slow and tedious.

so how would i save my itunes playlist ratings and etc when backing them up to an external, i would like to save my firefox bookmarks and settings. While keeping transmission installed and ready to use after restoring.

thanks for the help, i never really backed up anything with windows (besides dragging files to the external directly) so with osx im even more lost.

You should just be able to drag your iTunes library from your users music folder (in the home directory) to your external drive and then just copy it back after your fresh install.

There is an option in Firefox to export your bookmarks, not sure about other things though.

Go to: Bookmarks - Organize Bookmarks

From there you can export them to html. Works well for me.

I also want to do a complete restore, but honestly I will probably wait until OS X Lion comes out. But, can I wipe my HDD, do a clean install from Lion, and then restore from my TimeMachine backup?

I am also concerned about all my media (pictures, music, etc.).
