How to reset file types?

Something happened to the extensions on File Folders on my computer (under Folder Options --> File Types). It will not let me edit or remove any of the Actions used to open a file folder. I want to just reset it to the normal 'open' command. This is under Windows XP.

Tools > Folder Options > File Types (when in explorer)

This is based on W2k....I can see no reason why it should have changed but....then again....

Exactly what I have tried, but it won't let me edit or remove any of the actions. I talked to a friend running Windows 2000 and he is able to change them.

You need to be logged on with admin priveleges, all directories and subdirectories where the files reside need SYSTEM and Admin priveleges with full access.

After ensuring the above, then retry changing the file types.

Last, as a last resort, try a Windows XP Repair, a FAST Repair. This will modify all the registry settings to become exactly as they were upon initial installation.

I am logged on as the Administrator and it still will not let me modify the file folder actions. How do I perform a Fast Repair?

First, use the assoc.exe command from the command window or the run line. Here's an example page for Windows 2000, but I would expect this to work with XP.

Only do an in-place restore/repair if absolutely necessary.

Here's how. Reboot from the CD.
When you see the options to SETUP or REPAIR an installation, choose repair.
On the next screen, you will be given the option to use the Recovery Console or Repair.
Choose Repair, then the Fast option, not the Manual option.

That's it, but you should know that any settings without long file names will be wiped out because it will restore the REGISTRY and delete non LFN's. So you may need to reinstall any 16 bit apps if you have any. (Sounds odd, doesn't it?)
