How to request samples from DigiKey, Mouser etc..

Whats the standard way to beg for free stuff. Or to put it another way
ask for evalutation samples to make sure "the parts meet spec" before you
"order more".

Those companies don't give out samples. Usually manufacturers provide samples. What are you looking for?

Trying to get some parts to make those cmoy amps.
need a OPA134 opamp and a crossover, trying to figure out which ones would
be best.

Getting samples can be the best option when you only need one of a component, and can only buy it in mass quantities (like 100). Make sure you use your business or university in your address when you request samples, since they won't want to mess around with you if you're perceived to be a hobbyist (not a potentially good customer.)

Nothing wrong with being thrifty. Plus there's
a good bit to learn even off the cmoy especially
in tuning it.

I'm not suggesting he commit fraud. Relationships developed between customer and supplier last a lifetime. If you are in the business of component level design, you will do well to feel out companies when doing small jobs/projects so that in the future you know who you can count on when you will be needing a supplier for large jobs. Making these connections while you're at university is not a bad idea.

I'm not sure what rant you're off on with that Dave.
Requesting samples from electronics manufacturers/distributors
is a pretty common practice. It's, just that now that i'm off campus
for the summer it's not as easy to get components to work on things
so I was wondering how the big boys do it when then don't have labs to
pilfer from.

Most manufacturers have a "request sample" button right on the device page, like Maxim for example.

@Nutbucket, I was used to Mousers page that has that same request sample
button, but having never used Digikey before I was wondering how to ask them
specifically, but i guess they just dont do it, or perhaps an email would do the trick.

Nope, just disappointment. If you can get the samples by filling out the request pages honestly then go for it, otherwise my comments stand.

Digikey doesn't do samples. We use the enough around here to know;)

Digikey and Mouser typically don't do samples. You'll want to go through the manufacturer to get a sample, or perhaps a distributor like Arrow or Future. Don't expect too much from a distributor unless you have an established account, TI's samples are easy and quick though.

BTW, as far as an audio OpAmp goes, check out the LM386. It has excellent drive characteristics.

Go straight to National Semiconductor, TI, Dallas Maxim, you will get free samples galore if you request them.

Demon Xanth, how does the 386 compare with the LM617x. I just asked for a batch of 5 from NS.
Also i keep hearing things about getting high quality capacitors like the Nichion brand. Any thoughts
on them ?
