How to remove virus that is molesting mail contacts folder

So my son and sister each have this virus on their respective computers that emailed everyone on their mail contacts list. I booted with Avast AV and the latest signature files and it cleaned the trojan from my son's computer - didn't get the name of the virus though. Anyway.......for some reason, when i try to boot with same CD to my sister's Win 7 laptop it blue screens on me. I tried this about 4 times with same results.

Anyone know the trojan I'm describing and how to remove - it got past her Mcafee AV.

are you saying you are running some sort of avast bootable CD?

Yes...and it begins to run on the laptop with Win 7 and then blue-screens on me.
