How to remove the wrapping from a DVD movie

After many frustrating experiences (you've had them too, right?) I've finally perfected a method of unpacking DVD movies. I'm talking about your typical DVD:

1. Take a sharp blade (something like an Exacto Knife, or a razor blade) and run it along the edge of the rectangular case, on 3 sides (not the spine itself).

2. Open the clamshell case (it should spring right open after making those cuts).

3. Remove the slug protection device, if any, and trash it. That's optional, but I do this.

4. Remove the "Security Device Enclosed" stickers, which should be cut in two at this point. The two halves of each are best removed in one piece by peeling back from the cut-points - it's quite easy once you get used to it. I leave the top label intact because it usually has has the name of the movie and I may want to store my DVD's at some point with that label showing.

I can do a whole DVD in less than a minute using this method.

Yeah, man, but haven't you noticed? Almost all commercial packaging is a bitch to open. I only know of one product that is almost foolproof in its opening scheme, and that's Droste Cocoa, which has a really well designed packaging scheme. I guess you aren't hip to this, oh well... Personally, I would have relished seeing my OP a year or two ago. I've had to open around 100 DVD's without really knowing how and been frustrated lots of times. I bet most people can't open a DVD, remove all the packaging and discard in less than 60 seconds.

i don't understand why dvds require 3 pieces of tape that are a royal pain in the ass to fully remove. won't 1 piece of tape work just fine?

I have had some issues with the wrapper but most of the time my greatest pain (both figuratively and literally) comes from removing that annoying security slug thing. It is always cutting that skin under my nails...

I think the point is that while detailed instructions for using a knife to cut open the wrapper are somewhat interesting, and may be useful for people who have no control over their own fingers, it's hardly a "public service announcement" since it's just as easy to simply peel the wrapper off (and less dangerous particularly considering that a person who can't even control their fingers to peel the stickers will now be holding a sharp blade in their hand). 😉

I have not yet had a DVD (movie or software) that took me more than 30 seconds to open simply by ripping the shrink wrap and peeling off the sticker seals...
