I'm replacing my EPoX NForce4 hsf with a Zalman, and am wondering what is the recommended method of removing old thermal grease? It is dried/caked on there pretty good.

Isopropyl is great!!! It won't hurt the PCB or leave conductive residue if You get it all over. I used it at My last job daily cleaning up PCB's after soldering.

Just use alcohol and rub it off. If it's caked on really good and solid, try wetting a wad of tissue and then laying the pad on top of it to try to soften it up. If all else fails try using very fine grit sanding paper and sanding it off. Do not use coarse sandpaper as that will leave huge scratches on your heatsink.

I use a cotton swab, cutip to do the job w/ isopropyl alcohol. It took me several cleaning sessions to make it really squeeky clean for a new thermal paste 🙂

instead of papertowel (which has lint it leaves) got o walmart.. and spend 94cents for the LINTFREE glasses cleaning pads in the jewlery department. It will make sure you odn't leave any contaminates on the CPU or HeatSink. You get 2 of the clothes for 94cents and it will do a great job.

Dang, I've been spending $6 for lint free camera cloths for the last couple of years. I'll keep that in mind next time I need one.

haha.. yeah... i used to spend alot on them as well.. until i was putting things togetherf or my new build, and saw them at walmart for a buck...

wow, CraigRT that is ALOT of posts... lol how long did it take you to do that? Also, does this site purge any old topics?

Also, to stay of topic, a razor works good too.

I warm 'em up by using 'em or a hairdryer on low. Works like a charm. Final cleaning with an alcohol swab you can get in the diabetic supplies area at any drugstore.

isopropyl works with a qtip but every once in a while isopropyl won't do jack. i had to use wd40 once to get this chewing gum looking crap off an old 1.2 tbird. i figured if it didn't work i'd just get once of those fancy new athlon xp's. unfortunately it worked fine and i still have it.
