edit: did a power cycle of the external HDD and all is well! phew!
however, when I tried the Windows 7 "Upgrade" installation, it says the disk does not have enough space (C) when there is 22.3GB left! What is the point of upgrading if I have to uninstall my programs etc. to clear up space on the disk?
It said I needed 28.4GB of free space to upgrade.
