I have a friend who started a website at yahoo and would like to register it with search engines. But he does not want to pay for advertising.

I know he can pay for advertising and listings but not sure about any other way. Also I am very disappointed with Google as a search for the full domain of his site gave no results while the same search at yahoo and msn.com returned an exact match to the domain, showing that yahoo and msn really search the internet while Google is only registration based.

Also, since he opened the website through yahoo, does yahoo offer some listings for it automatically or does he still need to register it.

Thanks

http://www.google.com/addurl.html

And generally, I believe having other sites link to his will help to get him listed. Search engines can't just pull urls out of thin air. How long has he had the page up? It's possible that yahoo just adds it automatically since they know about it, but google will take a little bit of time to find it...

Thanks, I will tell him.

The page has been up for almost two weeks and I am not surprised that it cannot be found. But I would expect a search engine to check for the exact URL first. So if I enter www.anandtech.com it should give me the result for www.anandtech.com if the url exists. Yahoo and MSN did this successfully immediately after the site was running but google still cannot find it.

Will if registration helps and how long it will take for the site to appear.

Although I'm not a search engine expert, I don't thing google will go out and test www.foo.com everytime you search for "foo". It has a web crawler that builds up an index of the web and then when you search it goes and checks that index. So in order for your page to show up the crawler will have to find it on its own time. If they get enough requests for "foo" the system may be smart enough to start generating random domains incorporating foo and testing them, but I don't think they can do it for any given word.

But, as you said, MSN picked it up quickly so there's hope for google yet :)
