Hi guys

I would like to ask one query related with my lost data problem. I am describing the whole scanareo how I lost my data.

I connected one hard disk (second) as a slave with existing primary hard disk (first). Primary Hard disk (first) was the capacity of 40 GB and slave hard disk (second) was also having 40 GB capacity.

On primary hard disk (First) windows 98 was installed and running smoothly. When I connected new hard disk (Second) on slave it detects and shown only one partition of 17 GB capacity and it was showing empty. I took my backup from primary (first) hard disk and placed it on slave (second) hard disk. It was about 8 GB of backup data. Very eaisly data has been copied from first hard disk to second hard disk.

Next step I took for fresh installation of Win XP step to the first hard disk. I removed second hard disk from slave and format the first hard disk and I installed XP on first hard disk.

Again I put my second hard disk (backup HD) as a slave with first hard disk but it doesn't recognized.

I started booting with windows 98 bootbale floopy and then it starts recognizing both hard disk. some data I transffered through DOS command on to first hard disk from second hard disk. but it was very tedious job to transffer data through DOS. So I thought if second hard disk would be booted with windows 98 OS it will recognize and I will be abale to transffer data very easily to the first hard disk.

When I took initiative to install windows 98 on second hard disk it fails to install on it. after that I never able to see the second hard disk file even booting with the help of windows 98 bootable floopy also.

Then I agian put the second hard disk as slave with first hard disk which was already having XP OS (I did fresh installation after formatting). After that second hard disk start recognizing with first hard disk but second hard disk data was showing different than what I took backup before.

This way I lost my all data what I took backup before on to second hard disk.

Is there any way to recover my old data from second hard disk. Please suggest me if possible.

Best Regards.

Make and model of the drive??? Your drive may have a firmware issue. Hopefully that's not the case because that's going to be very expensive to get the data back. Firmware issue can not be fix with a cheap $3000 PC. I hope this is not one of those thin half height Maxtor or Seagate drives you are talking about.
