I was wondering since tivo removed the "skip over commercials feature" and since I've never owned a tivo if this is a thing that ONLY NEWER tivo's have. Also wanted to know if I were to get the "legendary first gen 1 time subscription tivos" would I still have to pay a subscription in some way to get like the guides or something.

Replay TV > TiVo
AFAIK you dont have to pay to download the guides just have a land line available for it to dial in.

Haven't been catching up with the new Tivo's but I have one of the "legendary 1st gen Tivos" ... it has the lifetime subscription and no you don't have pay a subscription to get the guide . The sub. stays with the tivo. So if I sold it to you, all you had to do wsa run through the setup and viola it should work.

Oh, and I'm dl'ing the guide via a serial cable through my computer ... no land line at home ...

Does it skip through commericals? I was looking at an ebay listing and it said "while it's a life time subscription, you still have to pay to get the guide.." Can you show me a pic of the REAL 1st gen tivo? Because I've seen many listings of the first gen Tivo with different pics..

What about the ReplayTV 5040? Skips commercials automatically and has internet video sharing (which the new ones do not).

Right now I'm paying $10/month for a Comcast (Motorola) Dual-Tuner HD DVR.

Yes, $12.95/mo or $299 lifetime.

ReplayTV 5040 is an excellent newer DVR:

1) Ethernet port built in.
2) Commercial Advance.
3) Internet Video Sharing.

TiVO = iPod
ReplayTV = iRiver Hxxx/Zen Micro

Just get TiVO or the DVR your cable/disk provider has to offer.

That actually makes more sense then it ever could because apple is attempting to buy Tivo.

'cause it makes you look cool to your friends and family?

Is Apple trying to buy TiVO? I caught something about it on the news but missed the part about what company it is.

Dude's lying. There is zero charge for anything after a lifetime subscription is purchased.

Yes, look it up online. I think there was a post about it here and it was on the news (which you missed). If I really gave a shat about "it makes me look cool around friends and family" I would have bought a crappy alienware system or got an icrap...

Your problem is you are asking this question in the wroing forums.

Go here:

TiVo community forums

There are lots of friendly TiVomaniacs there that will be more than happy to share their knowledge/experience!

Here's the deal with Tivo's.

ALL models can fast forward through commercials. No Tivo does this automatically, you can turn on a "30 sec skip" feature that rocks.

You must pay the lifetime subscription ($299) or monthly ($13) to use the Tivo. Without it, all you can do is pause live TV. For a while, Series 1 Tivos could be used like a VCR without a sub, but they upgraded the software to prevent that. The only exception is models with Tivo Basic - then it can be used like a VCR and has a 3 day guide (Tivo Plus has 14 days and you pay lifetime/monthly). There's a (discontinued) Toshiba Tivo with a DVD player that has Tivo basic, otherwise any of the DVDR's with Tivo (other than the Humax) have it too.

Lifetime subscription is for the Tivo's lifetime, not yours. This lead into my next point.

You want the newest model Tivo you can find. The Series 1's (all black, made by Phillips usually, some silver ones made by Sony) had modem problems and were of shoddy quality. They don't support broadband without some extra modding. They're louder and larger.

Series 2 support broadband with the use of a USB network adapter. They're a dark grey color.

Series 2.5's are just like Series 2, only they're a lighter shade of gray with a two-tone "faceplate". These are the newest models.

Uhhh, because the iPod is the "best of breed" at what it does and so is the TiVo?

Heheheh...Replay TV is going to be lucky if it stays in business for 6 more months. While that hardware that it comes with is a bit better (it has a built in LAN adapter), these are add ons for Tivo. Tivo's interface is far superior, and it's going to be around for a long time.

How is the iPod the "best of breed". While it looks nice, the audio is sub par and there are much better alternatives to the ipod that are cheaper. iPod=teh bose..
