How to pronounce term "bower" in Euchre

I'm pretty new to Euchre and I'm trying to get the terminology straight. My friend's family is really into cards and they love playing Euchre. Since I'm a novice, they thought it would be useful to give me a Euchre for Dummies book for Christmas.

When explaining the left and right bowers, the book explicitly said the term was pronounced "bour", rhyming with "flower." Well I finally got a chance to play Euchre with the family and they snickered and corrected me when I referred to left bower as "bour". Everybody in the family pronounced it "bar", like a bar of soap.

Seems silly to even ask, but which is right or can they be used interchangeably?

oh sorry, I'm watching Alias at the same time, I thought I had read something about which bower was strongest, right or left 😛

First of all, what the hell is "Euchre"? Second of all, what is a "bower"? Third of all, why don't you show them the book? Maybe you should tell them to play a game that OTHER people know how to play!

I started talking in a southern drawl after I was corrected. My friend wasn't too pleased about it.😀
