I sold a phone on ebay once that I didn't wipe because the person giving it to me to sell said they did it. The dumbass tried to extort me on my 'numbers' left in it.

OK, did and here's what I found, "The IMEI is only used for identifying the device and has no permanent or semi-permanent relation to the subscriber"

Okay i'm gonna explain what i am thinking.

1.I buy a phone. It has an IMEI number lets assume its 1234.

2.Now i put a sim in it. Lets assume the number is 9451-blahh-blah

3.After submitting the docs and ID proof, the companies records have my name, my address, my pic, the phone number and the IMEI number.

4.I remove the sim and throw away the phone. Random guy picks it up and put new SIM in it. The sim number(phone number) is 9936-blah-blah.

5.He kidnaps somebody and demands ransom with that phone with his own SIM card in it.

6.Police trace his call and find out the IMEI number of the handset which is being used to make the calls.

7.They call all cell phone companies and ask them to run the IMEI through their databases.

8.My name and all details come up.

???

Please tell me where i am wrong.

Theoretically this could be done with a rail gun or other device that can throw something fast and hard enough. Though it might be easier to aim for the sun. Though chances are, reaching the escape velocity would probably destroy it on it's own from the air friction.

I want to build a rail gun now, and start my own hard drive destruction business.

What? Does India not have a second-hand phone market? If we drop it off for recycling, sell, or give it away and the authorities come knocking, all we have to do it tell them and the burden of proof is on them. It will be very clear that you weren't using that IMEI anymore because it is even easier to see what account it was being used with. No idiot would stick an untraceable prepaid SIM in a phone with an IMEI that can be traced back to them to commit a crime because it defeats the purpose.

I know this is a necro, but it got me thinking. Why do people insist on making things so much more difficult than they need to be?

Take your sim out and sell the phone. Make sure you have a dated record of the sale. After that who gives a fuck what it's used for? You sold it and you can prove it.
