Hey
I'm trying to partition my C: drive, basically just divide it into two parts but when reading the help file I'm good on step 1and 2 but step 3 loses me.

Heres step 3:

Right-click an unallocated region of a basic disk,
and then click New Partition, or right-click free space in an extended partition,
and then click New Logical Drive.

here is what loses me, I can't find the unallocated region in Disk mangement???

I've Rt-clicked on everything on that page and I can't get to the next step where the Wizard then appears and I can then make mt selections...

what am I doing wrong? Thanks!

regards,
CA

Sorry guys, I didnt see the responce, anyway, I'm not using a software-program as I thought it could be done through WinXP.

Go to: Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Storage\Disk Management

and then from there I opened the help-file and tried to follow it.

Does the C partition takes up the whole drive? If yes then there is no unallocated space.

To divide up the C partition you first need to reduce it's size to create unallocated space. In the unallocated space create an Extended partition. In the Extended partition create the Logical drive D:

Step 1: |[<----------------C:--------------->]|

Step 2: |[<-----C:----->][--unallocated--]|

Step 3: |[<-----C:----->][----Extended---]|

Step 4: |[<-----C:----->][<------D:------>]|

Windows comes with no utility to resize partitions. You need to use a seperate program such as Partition Magic (costs $) or look for some free one on the net.

Note: An Extended partition is just a holder for one or more Logical drives, such as D:, E:, etc.

It sorta sucks that the OS doesn't come with a partitioning tool other than fdisk - and fdisk kills everything on the drive anyway!...

1) Do you have XP Pro or Home?
2) Do you have a secondary (internal or external) physical hard drive?
