How to paint flames?

Iv got my metallic-blue case with its nearly completed baybus siting over here, and I'm already looking forward to my next project. hehe 😀

What I want to do is paint some intense flames on the sides of a black case. Thing is, I have NO IDEA how I would do flames 😱.

How would you go about painting flames?
 
How many colors do you want...just single color or 3 color fade?

You could probably get a cool looking effect with a brush if you are good at painting (flames would be awesome if you could get them in the stile of stary night). Other than that if you want a single color all you need to do is use a mask like frisket or masking tape cut out the design and spray. If you want a fade you are gonna have to be pretty good with a spray can (I would practice on some junk first). I personally do all of that kind of stuff with my air brush, it makes it quite a bit easier as I can control the spray better. However it is very possible to do it with a spray can if you are good. You could also try making 2 or 3 different masks and spray each with a different color. It wouldn't give you the faded look, but it would give you some nice flames.
 
Where could I pick up one of these airbrushes? Any links on how to use them well? Im looking for a multi-color fade effect, so just masking and spraying is out (I tried it, actually. Looks ok, but I want more! 😀)
 
Let us know how it turns out as I would be brave enough to tackle this project. I would go to my friend who runs a body shop while drag racing and flames on funny cars are his specialty!
 
go visit some local(not franchise/chain) body shops(automotive or marine) and talk to a couple of the "workin' "guys. they'll set you up, prolly for a damn good price too.

I would have gotten back to this thread earlier, but I was up till 5 am working on my baybus last ngiht 😉. At least its done now.hehe.

Now I just have to wait for my neons to get shipped so I can plug em in....should have jumped for the 2 day shipping instead of trusting a 'friend who knows a guy...' :|

Anyway, once the neon's are in, Ill have some great pics of my main case. After that, Im off to do flames on my test case 😀

Well If I remember correctly my airbrush was like 100ish. It's a pretty good one for general purpose art; however, they have very specialized ones that run up to the $300-400 range. You are also going to need an air source. A compressor is a good idea (though I sold mine because I didnt' use it enough). You can buy propellent cans which is an acceptable substitute. Anyway I would do what was mentioned above (forget who mentioned it), but go to a local body shop and talk to them I'm sure they will be able to hook you up with a nice paint job. If you want to DIY you could probably do it with spray cans since its a pretty big work (or I'm assuming the flames will be of decent size because they are on a case)....but an Airbrush would be nice.

As far as how to's there are plenty of them on the net if you search with altavista or yahoo. Search for spray painting tips or even "spray painting flames" and I'm sure you will get hits.
 
Buy the current issue of "Car Craft" magazine. THe issue is devoted to paint this month. Painting a case is roughly the same as a car. And one of the articles is devoted solely to flames.
