Does anyone have a link or some knowledge as to how to overclock a 9700-np without a hard modification? I know you can overclock the 9500-np to 9700-pro specs with the Rivatuner softmod, but I don't think I want to chance the $150 for a 9500-pro when I can get a 9700-np stock for $199.

So, any links as to how to overclock the 9700-np? Can it reach 9700-pro levels? Thanks!

I don't know for sure but I think rage3d.com has some tool for overclocking. I guess getting the 9700 non pro to pro speeds really depends on what RAM you get. If you're lucky, you'll get the Samsung 2.8ns RAM, then you can. I've heard of people getting 3.3ns RAM which doesn't let them reach Pro speeds.

Once I get the board, how do I determine the RAM speeds, be it 2.8ns or 3.3ns? Thanks for the reply!

The ratings are on the RAM chips. usually the last number - sometimes I noticed they have a T afterwards. I'm unlucky enough to get 3.6ns RAM on my 9700 so it doesn't go above 283MHz.
Look for the last number, usually. 2, 28, 3, 36 etc.

I think you`ll need a new BIOS for your 9700 to OC it, not 100% sure though.
The memory chips that the 9700pro uses are labled 2A, so if your 9700s memory is labled 2A, then the chance are that you`ll be able to hit 9700pro memory speeds.

You will need to flash your BIOS, you can get the BIOS and the flash utility from here

Get the Hercules / Generic 9700 non pro one (same as the ATi based)

Then make a floppy with all the files in the ATi Flash Utility zip file

Then go into DOS and type exactly: "atiflash -f -p 0 newbiosfilename.bin", obviously replacing newbiosfilename with whatever the .bin file is with the Hercules /Generic 9700np bios file...
