How to optimize large/small SSD + large HDD for lightroom?

So I just got a 256 GB Samsung 840 pro for my main drive. Previously I had a Vertex 2 64 GB with a Samsung spinpoint 1 TB drive.

How would you setup Lightroom/apps/media?

Currently I have all my apps installed on the 840 Pro, as well as the lightroom catalog. All media resides on the 1 TB drive. Still have to format the 64 GB SSD, and thinking about using that for the Camera Raw Cache in Lightroom and set it to 50 GB. No idea if this is remotely optimal.

Here is how I do it.

The RAWs themselves are on a classic HDD, cached by a SSD via Intel Smart Response.

Everything else is on my main SSD (830).
Catalog
Camera Raw
Preview Folder (do not forget that, it seems to be the most speed sensitive!)

But in all honesty, Lightroom does profit a lot less from a SSD than I would have thought. A lot still seems CPU intense. Or I am just spoiled as a long time SSD user. ^^


I can't tell you on which SSD you should put what, it depends on how full your 840 is. The 840 should be a lot faster than any 64GB. If the 64GB is of decent performance I would consider using it as SSD Cache if you have the right Intel chipset on your motherboard.
