How to mirror drive's contents to 2nd drive on fly?

I have most of my files located on a network drive so that various people can access them. The problem occurs when I want to work on these files off-line and do not have access to a dial-up connection. Usually, I try to remember to copy the req'd files to my laptop, but often I don't get all the files I need, or I am not sure if they are up-to-date. The solution is usually to copy over the entire drives contents before I leave, but this is time consuming, inefficient and extremely inconvenient.

Is there any way to mirror or sync two drives such that when changes are made to one, the other is synced automatically. I am looking for a solution that I can use with Win2000 - and I am not interested in buying any additional sofware at this point.

w2k supports offline files... i tried it once or twice, but no one uses it so I didn't spend time to look at it... i think it works, try seach microsoft.com for offline files..

You can set up a software RAID array in Windows 2000 as long as the drive is not the boot drive

Sorry I just realized that you are wanting to sync them to your laptop not a drive in the server, not sure what you can use for that but I will look and see what I can find

Thanks - I have looked at the microsoft website and have not found much. There was something about a File Replication Service (FRS) that could be set up to sync during log on, log off or user request, but I could not find more specific info...

Active directory will control the FRS do you have access to set up services on the server?

Try a little program called Second Copy. It will mirror your drive over networks, you can set how often and what files to copy. You can get a trial version here. R

Program seems excellent - the only issue I have is that files with long filenames that are deeply embedded in many folders do not get copied with their original file name. It seems to max out at a total of about 128 characters including folders and filenames. Waz up wit dat???
