How to Manually Configure a VPN Connection in Windows 10

When your organization authorizes you to work from any remote location, they would also allow you to access their network using your laptop or desktop computer. Since your office network is likely to remain hidden behind multiple firewalls, you need a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to gain access to the resources and data kept on your company’s server.

Windows 10 can be configured to work as a VPN client, and as long as you have correct credentials, you can easily and quickly connect your PC to your office network.

Here’s how:

Step 1
Get to the VPN window

Right-click the Start button, click Network Connections, and click VPN from the left pane of the window that opens up next. This takes you to the VPN window. From here you can configure how and when Windows 10 can connect to a VPN server, configure or remove existing VPN connections, etc.

Step 2
Begin creating a new VPN connection

Click Add a VPN connection, select Windows (built-in) from the VPN provider drop-down list, specify a name in the Connection name field (AnandTech for this example), and type the name or IP address of the VPN server in the Server name or address field. This tells Windows 10 that you want to use its built-in VPN client feature to connect to your organization’s VPN server. You may need to talk to company’s network administrator/systems administrator to get the required details such as VPN server name, its IP address, etc.

Step 3
Provide other details

Choose your preferred connection type from the VPN type drop-down list (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) for this example), select a sign-in method from the Type of sign-in info drop-down list (User name and password for this example), add other contextual details depending on the option selected from the Type of sign-in info list (user name and password for this example), check the Remember my sign-in info box (conditional and optional), and click Save. This creates a new VPN connection with all the details you provided. After successful creation, the wizard takes you back to the VPN window.

Step 4
Connect using VPN connection

Click the VPN connection name (AnandTech for this example) from the VPN window, and click Connect. This creates a secure channel (also referred to as tunnel) from your PC to your organization’s VPN server, checks your sign-in credentials, connects you to it, and allows you to access your company’s network. In addition to clicking Connect, you can also click Advanced options or Remove to make changes to the configuration or remove the VPN connection altogether respectively.
