from time to time, i need to remote desktop in to edit photos and videos. seeing how TeamViewer is not safe, i will try Google Chrome Remote Desktop next.
so im thinking of setting up a spare PC...if hackers get in the spare, there wont be important files there anyway. no biggie. but now, how to make sure hackers cant mess up any other PCs connected to the same fios router?

Why would you let hackers easily hack your router and then worry about PCs on the LAN being compromised?

Make sure you don't have unnecessary open ports, turn off UPNP, turn on firewall function if the router comes with it, have a long, complex, strong password for web interface on the WAN side if you really need to access your router remotely.

I agree with the others, seems like a non-issue particularly.

However, VLANs would do what you're describing I believe.

Vlans will do what you want, but you are much better off securing your router so that no one can get in in the first place. Letting hackers have access to your network except one PC on a Vlan is same as closing the barn doors AFTER the horses have escaped.......

1) Set up your router as a private OpenVPN server so you can VPN into your home and RDP to your computer without going through The Cloud™.
2) Stop installing malware on your computers.

...and then shooting the horses and setting the barn on fire.

You don't need a new router. You can setup OpenVPN server on your PC and connect it remotely with OpenVPN client. They are in the same package.
