how to make persistent VPN tunnel between 2 firewalls

Is it possible to create a persistent VPN connection between two firewalls so the internal network of one firewall can access the resources of the other exteneral network through VPN without even knowing about VPN (since the firewall will handle everything transparently?)

cisco pix handle this fairly well, all-be-it expensively, there are some yum-cha routers that do it however, but you are better off having the same router at each end

Forgot the software router root(pun intended), not a bad idea if you have the hardware lying around, cheap to do, a lot of configurability, matches the high-end stuff in features, not nessesarily as stable, but meh. Look at snapgear if you want a hybrid of these two, they make routers with embedded linux.
