My fountain (more on that later) can atomize a liter of water a day.
Cats LOVE to drink from running water.
Frankly, I've seen "Cat Fountains" at PetCo for $50 and I've seen fountains at department stores for $15. Take your pick :) You could get a statuary pump and some rubber tubing at any garden store for probably $10 and make your own cat fountain.

Anyway, if you're concern is about filling to fountain as opposed to the fact that kitty likes to drink out of it, I'd just let it go, b'c you will probably have to fill it just as much if she doesn't drink out of it.
If you're concerned about her drinking it, the scented extracts may work, or just try and convince her to use her own cheapie fountain.

Sidebar: If you have a nebulizer (ultrasonic fog generator) it actually throws the essential oils off the surface into the fog it generates and is more powerful than any air freshener! 3 drops of Lavender oil had my room smelling like a flower shop for a week, just running the nebulizer for a few minutes. Not to mention, the fog rolling off the fountain is an awesome effect.

My cool fountain actually has a copper coil that extends up from the basin and a windchime hangs from it. The paddle at the bottom of the windchime hangs in the fountain's stream which jingles the chimes as it goes. It's brilliant!

My cat loves to drink out of my fountain. Try putting something around the fountain that the can't won't cross (like Saran Wrap, aluminum foil, a piece of plastic runner spike-side-up or give the fountain a spritz of a cat repellant (it's some herbal thing - bought mine at a pet store). After a while, hopefully the cat will get the hint and stay away and you can remove the stuff.
Try some white vinegar. Not a lot, just enough to change the taste of the water. It will keep your pump clean and water fresh. Not essential oils. They can kill a pet.

Hard to stop if he does it when you're not there but when you're there carry him to his water bowl when he tries. My cat used to bug me all the time to open the bathroom faucet to drink. It was funny at first but it kinda got annoying so each time she'd bug me I would bring her to her water bowl.

Maybe try putting some kind of food coloring in it, the color might put off the cat, but it should not be harmful if he does drink it. Maybe salt? That might mess up the pump though.

Cats like running water. If the water sits there they have trust issues with it. While one of our cats would drink water from the bowl, the other one needed the faucet running and then pigged out on the running water.

If water is coming out of your bowel you should see a doctor. :p Unless you consumed Taco Bell then it's probably normal.

Get your cat one of these, they and you will be thankful for it.

I'm assuming the bleach thing or adding something to the water was a joke? A cat is not intelligent enough to understand the water is the problem. For example, outdoor cats often die from drinking leaking antifreeze from cars because they like drinking it.

Edit: just got myself owned by a thread necromancer

Some people would follow that bad advise! People should never post statements like that! You are absolutely right!

That's cool actually, I think my cat would like that. I wonder if it gets gross after a while though, like moldy/mineral build up etc. I guess if you use filtered water it might not be too bad. I presume you would not want to use distilled though.

It does need to be cleaned as there will still be buildup as the water in the bottom is fairly sedate. They also are terrible to use with hard water if that is what you have locally. You can absolutely use distilled water though. So long as your cats are eating they are getting their vitamins and minerals there, so don't need them from their water. There is also a carbon filter that sits on top of the pump filtering the water coming out the stream up top. Consult with your vet about using distilled water though if you want to be sure. If your cats have any health issues, maybe there is a situation where it is not advisable.

We were up north in Ontario for a few months this year and had our cats and used distilled water because the hard water was leaving mineral residue all over the stainless steel.

Stainless steel is also great for food and water dishes because it's easily cleaned/sanitized and won't absorb anything the way plastic will.

It probably would get gross. I only give my cats and dogs purified water.
