how to make .avi from my dvd's

I've got a lot of dvd's that i put on my HD originally, but I never figured out how to convert to .avi

I have dvdfab and that transfers the file to the HD, then I use DVDshrink so it doesn't take up so much space, but then I have all these .bov files (or something like that extension)...the problem is that I'd much rather have a bunch of nice clean .avi's so I don't need to sort through all the files to find the one that plays the whole movie...I also like the fact that I can just burn .avi's onto DVD without needing to have 50 files to pick from (same problem as before)

...so could someone tell me a program (free would be a bonus) 😉 that allows me to made .avi's from the files I rip from my dvd's in DVDfab? Could you also explain what I'm supposed to do once getting this program...

I know someone will say google, but I did and I read "how" but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me, so if someone could step-by-step it for me, I'd appreciate it dumbed down, I don't mind admitting my incompetence in the matter.

Thanks,

John

You can use Handbrake which is free to made AVIs. The problem with it is only H264 quality looks good. XviD looks really bad for some reason.

Dvdfab can convert directly to avi

As far as the .vob files go, you can use ImgBurn to create an .Iso file from them and you can convert the .iso to .avi using DvdFab.

Personally I like Fairuse Wizard best for converting .iso or DVD's to .avi

I'd have to go with handbrake here. Lot's of options to choose from and good quality encoding.
