How to make an offer for a domain?

There are a couple of domain names that I am interested in making offers for. I was going to send an e-mail to the e-mail addresses listed in the whois contact info but everything I write sounds like a scammer 🙂

The domains aren't very special and most of them have some circa-1998 single page website up.

I've never done this before and mentioning an escrow site (like escrow.com or afternic.com) will probably set off red flags.

Suggestions from people who have done it before?
 
Be straightforward. ... tell 'em why you want it....
make a reasonable offer (dont lowball or come off sounding like a douche "well.. since you never use the site, i'll give you the $10 it took to purchase the domain name")
