How to make an external HDD work with a Mac?

My friend has a external HDD formatted with NTFS, so it's not working with her Mac.
If I just reformat it with FAT32, would it work? Also, I heard that it matters between formatting on Windows with FAT32 versus formatting on Mac with FAT32.
Thank you for any help / advice!

Yes, FAT32 will allow the drive to work cross-platform. I have two external 250gb drives, one is FAT32 and i can read the data no matter if i have it connected to OSX or XP.

I tried using disk management (compmgmt.msc) but it would not let me format it with FAT32, mine is also a 250 GB drive. What should I use to format it with FAT32?
