How to lower the speed of my Yate Loons?

i thought my antec tricools were loud, so i ordered 3x yate loons for my antec p180. turns out, they're even louder! how can i slow these down, the cheap and easy way? i know i can use the 3 pin connectors and find spots here and there to plug them in (slow via fanspeed), but is there any other way? i don't want to spend 28 bucks on a zalman fan controller, nor do i want to spend 15 bucks on a crap one...

plug them into your motherboard and see if you can get fan control with 3 pins. otherwise, you'll have to get a fan controller. and unless you're sitting 1 foot away from the PC, you shouldn't be bothered much by the fans. there might be something inside your computer that's causing more noise than it should. check it out. what fans did you get? D12SL-12? D12SM-12?

the honest asshole opinion: grow a pair, put on some headphones or position the PC so that it's on your left side that way most of the noise gets sent in another direction.

I too would have to say one would have to be hypersensitive to find Y-Ls irritating even at full speed - unless you got something other than the SL version. Now you can get lemons - one of the bunch I got recently was significantly louder than the others. You can find the Coolermaster Aerogate 3 fan controller for $12. with Froogle. It's the one I use.

If you don't want to pay for a controller you can 7v mod them all, it's what I did. Google 7v mod or something like that and you'll find a guide, the Yate's become silent and still move good air.

Basically you move the ground wire from the 0v slot down to the +5v slot by switching the pins (I used a really small nail to push the pins in to switch the wires) so that the total volts going to the fan is now 12-5=7

For the Yates, you don't need to go anywhere near as low as 7V - 10V is about it. Go much lower and you may as well not have fans and they are plenty quiet at 10. You can easily calculate the resistance you'd need to get them down to 10V.
