What is holding you back?

money haha. bikes nowadays are soooooo expensive
Got 2-300 to spend? You can get a perfectly functional used bike for that much. It may be a few pounds heavier than my handmade road bike, but it's not really going to slow you down any. 90% of how fast you go is how fit you are, not the bike.

No, he looks like he's a normal weight. There's nothing manly about 70 extra pounds (of fat) IMO.

Hell, when I lived in Miami and had no girlfriend, I was biking 20 miles a day, 6 days a week. I went from about 190lbs down to my lowest of 170, and I am 6' 1". I went over 2,000 miles that summer. Once I moved back to NY, I could climb and hill without even struggling. I was in my prime!

I was on a very limited fat died, with lots of veggies and pasta.

Fastforward 9 years and I am married with 3 kids. Have not had any time bike in 5 years. I am 205lbs but keep in good shape with Tae Kwon Do and jogging lately. Still miss biking to this day, but motorcycling fills some of the void. If I just had an extra couple of hours a day.

If jogging hurts your knees, try running on the ball of your foot. Saw something on Discovery about guys who run marathons like that, and it works for me.

I enjoy the fact that in the "Before" pic, he is holding a bottle of Miller High Life. The champagne of beers.

If you're not hardcore bicyclist and mtn biker, you can get decent bike with helmet for under the cost of ATI 9500 Pro.

You can do without the ATI 9800 Pro verison of bicycle. If you get into it, then maybe later on you can save for more expensive bike.

This is pretty much true. A $200-300 used bike will get you in shape just as well as a $1200 bike. As with most things, you'll find yourself wanting the nicer stuff as you get more into it, but it's not like you need a grand to get into cycling initially.

Bikers can burn up to 1000 calories riding 17-19mph. All the bikers i know ride so they can eat what they want and drink what they want. Not only for that but it is fun too.

I know running you can burn more calories, but one hour on a bike is easier than 1 hour of running(not jogging). AHA(American Heart Association) has a comparison chart. Running has something like 1440 for 150lb person. It is easy to see how you can lose weight easily just by biking.

Running does burn more per hour by virtue of being less efficient, but you can't exactly do it for three hours at a time like you can cycling. I'm getting in about 10-15 hours per week right now so I basically get to eat what I want and am losing weight. :D

Pretty good. I dropped 54lbs in 2 months and 1 week getting ready for a show last summer. Weightloss is different for everyone, meaning the rate of loss, the methods that work best, etc.

Fausto1 (and any other bikers) can you kick out some guidlines in what to look for in a (cheaper) bike? With me being 1.5 weeks away from finishing school for the year, I'm looking for some decent exercise that's easy on the knees and biking looks like a good fit.

I would walk/jog/run but too many years of backpacking (and road training for the trail) with flat feet have pretty much destroyed my knees. :(

What's your budget and what kind of riding would you like to do?

LOL. Good job putting it in terms even an ATOTer can understand. LOL.

Pointers for buying a bike...

1. BUY IT FROM A BIKE STORE. Walmart and target may sell a ridable bike, but bike stores will fit you to a bike. Plus, most will give you the first checkup free. That is important considering the chain will stretch some and the derailers will need to be adjusted. They will answer your questions with correct answers other than it looks good.

2. If you sole purpose is to lose weight, you still need to be comfortable. Ask to ride it around to make sure the seat wont poke a new a-hole. Your bum will be a little sore after a the first we ek or so of riding, but it gets used to it (that sounds bad). Do not go out and get a titanium or carbon fiber frame. MUCHO DINERO. Much mucho dinero. An aluminum frame is fine to start off with. Steel is okay too, but it can rust.

3. Suspension bikes may have a softer ride, but it takes more power to go up hills. Notice when you try one out, you will "bob" a little bit with this. Hard tails do not have it, but hard tails(no shocks) have a harder ride in comparison. Suspension bikes do have knack to weigh a little more. They also cost more.

4. Realize what kind of surface you are going to ride on. I use a cross trainer wheel, road and off road treads. using big knobby tires sucks on roads since it has way to much traction. Then again, slicks are horrible on dirt. I spend about 70% on roads mostly going to class and 30% on trails on the weekend.

5. If you ask what the best bike out there, you are going to get a different response no matter who you ask. A $200-$300 bike is really going to be the same anywhere you go, but with different paint. I personally like Trek just cause that is what i have. It would probably different if i had walked into a schwinn store.

6. 24 or 18 or 21 gears. Doesnt matter. You are more likely to use the middle range in your daily riding.

7. A HELMET is a must.

8. If you plan on riding at night, you must have a white light for the front and a red reflector that can be seen from 500ft for the back. This is the law. More so for safety.

9. Bicycles have to obey the same rules as automobiles do. Weaving around cars will get you killed as you will be unpredictable

10. Do not ride in the gutter. That is where you will get the most flats.

11. Get some sort of hydration. water bottle, camelbak etc..

12. If you break something or something squeaks, take it to the store. Dont touch the derailers unless you know what you are doing. Usually it is a bolt that wasnt torqued correctly and will be fixed for free.

13. Get a good lubricant, like tri-flow and ask how what kind of maintenance you need to do.

Anyways, sorry i posted so much...Im currently planning a bike trip in New Mexico for this summer.
