How to learn to "eat only until full" instead of stuffing my face?

Well a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, I used to work as a banquet food server. 12-16 hour shifts with no breaks and I learned to eat and run from the kitchen to the banquet rooms. Developed good habit of eating 20 times a day and stayed thin.

Eat just a little many many times.

I was only teasing you. 😀 Impulses are very difficult to control. It's mind over matter. Although I only have an impulse to eat much or certain kinds of food at that time of the month, I haven't really had that experience that many seem to have. But here's my take: Start with the mind. If you have people around you who're so into food, try not to be an active part. I notice that societies where food is plentiful tend to tranform food into an art and then the urge to compete for it in flavour gets out of control. The less you think of food as some art, the more likely you'll perceive it as a survival necessity. And when you perceive it as a necessity for survival, you'll only fill your tummy reasonably to what is needed. There's nothing wrong with having so much to eat once in a blue moon, but doing it frequently becomes a problem. Remember, extremity of any kind isn't healthy in most cases. Hope that helps.

Bon appetit. 😉

I don't think he was asking how to become an anorexic skank.

*sigh* When I was in my early 20's, I could eat ANYTHING at any time of the day, as much as I wanted and I never broke 210. 210 is where I want to be...I can get there....I'll starve, but hey, to be that weight again....

Thanks luvly. I appreciate the intelligent response. Unlike the bitter women here, you actually had something intelligent to say in your response. Unlike my GF, I have not ballooned up like the Goodyear blimp. I've put on exactly 12 pounds since we met. Not exactly a lot on a 73" frame. True, I'm still about 15 pounds heavier than I'd LIKE TO BE. But it can be worked.

Anyway, you're right about the Italian thing. I love the wine, women and song. 🙂 Sometimes I wish I didn't like to cook; I'm my own best customer when I cook. 😱

I also am doing the "water thing" all day. I have actually lost 4 pounds over the past three weeks. I'm trying! I can tell that the water is making me feel more awake during the day.

What "bitter women" might you be refering to Michael ?

I happen to be in pretty decent shape and am fortunate enough to have a man who considers me sexy.As for being "bitter" I like you but you take the crown in that area.

Hey, I'm bitter like a lemon left out in the sun. Agreed. But hey, you took a cheap shot, (my interpretation) I responded. Anything wrong with that?

Actually Michael,my response was an honest one,not a "cheap shot" pretend she talks about you and your body like you do her's,that should help you regulate your portion size.

I have a sugesstion. Since you like to off-road and the outdoors get a dirt-bike. Like a used two stroke 250 and ride on the weekends. First it's like no other exercise and you'll shred the lbs. second you won't tear up your truck.

I have the same problem MichaelD, it's really no fun. Drink tons of water while you eat, and eat low fat meats when you do it, that's what has worked best for me(fills you up quick without making you fat, you can also try the apple and cheeze combo). Cardio also kills my appitite pretty good but what it all comes down to is having a life, the more busy you are with family and friends, the less inclined you'll be to eat for no reason. When you hang around the house all the time there's really nothing better to do than eat and be lazy. Practice saying no as well, eventually you'll be able to get it under control.

Ok, here is a picture for you.

Just imagine your girlfriendhaving to push your stomach out of the way and then tape it up with duct tape just so she can romance you.

O_M_G....I think I'm gonna hurl...that worked. Thanks, Ulfwald. I will know develop a non-eating, eating disorder in your name. 😉

BD231, great advice and you're right...I eat when I'm home...when I'm out and about, I don't really think about it! The problem is that as soon as I walk thru the door, my STOMACH sees the fridge. :disgust: I'm trying though...especially the water part. 🙂

That's actually pretty funny. 😛

What has worked for me the last 25 years is filling my plate with a moderate amount of food and never going back for seconds or thirds. I'm serious. It takes some willpower at the beginning but, as time passes, it becomes a habit.

Of course, 30 minutes later I grab a half gallon of chocolate chip ice cream out of the freezer and eat the whole thing?:Q I follow that up with a couple of extra large Snickers and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I wash it all down with half a gallon of milk and Nestle's Quik! As the guilt sets in I eat 3 or 4 cups of strawberry yogurt to make myself feel better. There's nothing like eating healthy!😉

hm, make sure ur kids don't over eat i guess, its a habit for life.

if i feel like eating more i just eat veggies. atleast its healthy, mostly water/fiber etc.

Personally, I just eat when I'm hungry, at least when I can - like, at home on my days off. At work, I eat a bit less, because I'm used to eating a little bit every hour and a half, or somewhere around that. It's just not very much.
But anyway, I pretty much just stop eating when I feel full, because I hate that "stuffed" feeling. It's just too uncomfortable to be worth putting up with. Yeah sure, some food is great, but when I feel like throwing up for the next half hour, well, it just isn't worth it to me.
Now just a quick bit about my eating habits - 2 bowls of cereal is a full meal to me. A single can of Spaghettio's is a full meal. There's some people I know who can eat a full day's worth of food for me - in a single meal. I'm one of those thin-frame people - about 5'8" (I think) and 125lbs.🙂

I know. I just felt a cheap shot was necessary after she attacked me last time.

Kudos for recognizing this about yourself, its often overlooked or ignored, if not encouraged by moms and dads and grandparents who went to bed hungry a lot as children (eat everything on your plate young man, there are starving children somewhere who would be thankful to have what you're throwing away...blah blah blah).

I used to go out to buffets and gorge myself until I was uncomfortably full. Painfully full, some times. Now I've stopped doing that.

I can't say it was difficult to change, once I made the realization beyond my immediate discomfort.

I started thinking about it before eating, not just after I had gorged myself nearly to death.

Drink more liquids in your meal. Drink alot of liquids even before the meal. Not as much as during though. Plus, I just eat as much as I want from there, but I keep active. If health is the issue, then inactivity is the main culprit for those problems. I eat a while lot, but I also try to find time to do some sport.

I wish i could GET FULL. Rarely do i ever get completely full after I eat...i HATE IT. I wish for ONCE i can just be happy and NOT HUNGRY. Grr...
