how to lay sod?

In my seemingly neverending quest for proper yard drainage to keep my foundation from getting wet:

I've added fill dirt up against my house to get it to slope more away. Now.. It would take a bulldozer to do this 'correctly' by pushing dirt to make my entire yard slope away... So I'm adding dirt to make it slope at least 4-5 feet. Any more than that and it would touch my siding.

With sod, I know how to lay it on the dirt itself... but what about over existing grass? I'm assuming I can't just lay it on top... or can I?

Yep. You simply can't lay sod down on top of existing grass. It will never take root.

make sure its nice, clean and doesnt have any unusual lumps
