Can't wait to learn how to drive stick! When we were in Vegas, we kept talking about renting a Viper or a Porsche 911 for a day and tossing it around. We had the money to do it, but only two of us knew how to drive stick (and only barely.) It was soo sad...so I vowed I must learn stick driving this summer (even though I'm stuck with my slushbox 4-cylinder Accord for another 2 years!)

If you were talking about "tossing around" an $80K rental car, you obviously aren't old enough to rent one.

Most of those places have steep age requirements (like 30+).

I like how a M5 owers plainly states that his car is widely regarded as being the best.

That would be like me stating "It is widely known that marshallj is the best poster on anandtech".

Other people are supposed to regard you or your belongings, you aren't.

Just like he said, synchros in modern transmissions make it unnecessary. As a matter of fact - he's doing it incorrectly, unless he learned while driving a Mack truck or something. It's not necessary to go into neutral, let the clutch out and blip the throttle, and do it again while going into the lower gear. He could have just downshifted from 3rd, blipped the throttle while shifting into 2nd and accomplished the same thing.

you are incorrect here. the method you have just descrived is called rev-matching--- obviously matching the revolution of the clutch to the flywheel/pp to save wear on the clutch.

going into neutral, getting off the clutch, and blipping the throttle matches the layshaft and other misc comonents in the tranny to facilitate the GEAR CHANGE... thereby saving wear on the synchronizers

rev matching alone facilitates the CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT

The guy who made the videos, Greg, is a very intelligent person. Don't just go around and say it's incorrect and all that. I know he's been to a couple of racing schools so he probably knows more than you do. He also has a black 996TT. Videos of his Porsche was on movies.taner.net when that site existed... maybe you've seen them?
