How to launch a boat

LOL! This stuff seems to happen quite a lot too. People don't seem to do any assessment of how heavy what they're lifting is, and how heavy the crane is. I'm sure there are basic equations out there to figure out if there should be a counter weight, and how much it should be, for a given payload. But at least they filmed it and this happened, and for that, we thank them.

they probably just get the gross weight of the truck and compare it to the gross weight of the boat. that doesnt account for the fulcrum point, creating a much lighter load on the truck side then you calculated.. and not to mention wind and other shifting/bouncing that would easily push the weight in the boats favor.

then you have two guys standing on the boat, waiting for the boom to fall on them when things go wrong.

That was not a good spot for launching a boat of that size. They couldn't get the crane close enough so the operator had to boom out a fair bit. I wouldn't have attempted that other than from a concrete quay where I could lower the boat more or less straight down.
 
This kind of thing is all over YouTube.

Some times I take the kids to the park on Saturday morning and we watch the morons at the boat slip. Good times.

You want to be really rich, you want an education in con artistry. But you've got to be really good at it to make it big. They get all the money, all the girls and they win at life. Until a crane falls on their noggin. But there wasn't much of value in there anyway.

Money and power in the wrong hands, that's what brings down an empire. Ask anyone who's been in one for any length of time. But don't ask the con artists. They can't tell you that. It's against their religion.
 
You would think there are marinas that specialize in this kind of thing. This is why fork lifts are designed to lift straight up.
 
All these fail boat launch videos on youtube are doing is recording acts of insurance fraud. Do you really think somebody who just dropped a shit load of money on a customized boat would not care to over see the entire operation from building to christening?

In the U.S. anyway, pretty much any well-equipped marina or yard has a Travelift, which is a big, cubical, twin-sling crane specifically designed to put boats in and out of the water. They operate on a u-shaped pier where the frame straddles the water. Quite interesting to operate once you get over being twenty feet in the air, and get used to the controls.

@Baked, don't think we were witnessing a christening in that video. They likely were just putting her back in after the spring work. Typically you have to haul them and at least touch up, possibly replace, the bottom paint, and check the zincs.

We had one small push boat similar to, but smaller than this one, with an A-frame and winch for handling anchors:

MOSTLY it was used for running barge anchors...which on our barges, ran to about 10,000 lbs...it was a squirrelly little boat...especially with a big anchor hanging on the front...the captain put in under twice in two years...
That little fucker was HEAVY as hell...even more so when it was full of water. 😛
 
I seriously doubt the boat owner was in charge of operating the crane.

Personally, I'd have no problem with the boat people suing the crane guy.

They're amateur retards. Guy operating crane has gone pro (retard).

He doesn't have to be an engineer. The people who make the truck will say how much weight the boom can take in different positions. He just has to ask the customer how much the boat weighs. And not be illiterate.

Yep, once you extend out the center of gravity changes, the crane operator should have known he was at/near the max capability and anchored down the front to prevent that flustercluck.

The crane driver was retarded. All cranes have a chart and a boom gauge to show how far you can boom down with XX weight.
