For my job I have to get a security clearance and I have to list whether my GF is a citizen or not. She emigrated from Belarussia in 1989 and has a US passport. Her parents are now citizens but she isnt sure if it was before or after she turned 18. What govt. office do you contact to figure it out?

I understand that. However, if her parents became citizens before she turned 18, she automatically receives citizenship. This is why I need a way to check.

I'm in the same situation, I could never get a straight answer. (born out of US, came here when I was young, parents became citizens, got a passport before I became 18, now I'm 24 and I don't know if I'm a citizen. )

I never tested or filled out any papers to become a citizen.

You don't automatically become a citizen just b/c your parents do. My family emigrated to the US when I was 5. They became citizens when I was 12 or 13. When I turned 18, I had to either accept or reject the citizenship extended to me b/c of my parents. She should have a Naturalization papers if she became a citizen.

You joking right? If her parents got citizenship before she was 18, she gets it too. Plus, in U.S., you have to be a citizen to get the U.S. Passport unlike some other countries..

Waggy you might be right. Here what I probably did, found this on the government site. You can get a document to say that you are a citizen.

Think of it this way. When citizens go abroad, whats the one document they bring as proof of US citizenship? thats right, a US passport. Its all you need.

um.. where on either of those sites does it state that when the child becomes older than 18 he/she doesn't have to fill out any papers? If I'm blind please point it out!
