You don't have any drive from any other computer to try? Maybe you can borrow one from a friend? I mean it works with the 8GB drive you are using now, why won't it work with a 40GB drive?

By "i819", I assume you hit "9" by mistake, and you mean Intel 810 chipset. If your BIOS build date is later than 2000, the odds are fair that you are good up to the IDE limitation (~137GB).

There is a small chance that you could encounter the 65K cylinder (33.8 GB) barrier that existed only in some Award BIOS builds from ~ 1999. You might as well buy a 40GB drive and give it a try. I could find absolutely no information about this make and model of motherboard.

If there is a problem, you can always use the Ontrack drive overlay utility provided by the manufacturer. Drive overlay utilities are very refined these days, work seemlessly, can easily be disabled and uninstalled, provided that you RTFM.

Thanks ! But my friends don´t have one ! I won´t like to spend with a new HD before having the correct information. I´ve gotten the manual and I could seen that there is a chance to work with ATA-4 rate 66 MB/s so, if I am correct, I can try to install HD-40GB!. But I will try to change. Maybe I´ll have some performance problem. Maybe not !? I could just buy another motherboard but I didn´t go to do it.
The next problem I believe I can find is how to work with 2 HDs without lost performance because I have one CD and one CD-RW in my PC.
Thanks for all informations and suggestions !
Is there anything more I should do ?

You are correct. The chipset is i810. Sorry !

I´ve gotten the manual through the internet. The P3-141 also uses UltraDMA/66 technology, which allows for Bus Master IDE data transfer rates of up to 66MB/sec. So I think I could try to install the HD-40GB. If, suddenly, happen some performance problem it would be because the transfer rates, I suppose ! Am I going by the correct way or not ?

If nothing happen I will make de Bios upgrade. But I really would like to avoid it !
As I have already written before, I won´t like to install another HD before having the correct instrctions. But I´ll try.

Do you believe that this is the mean way to find a solution? What about the performance? Because I will have 2 HDs, one CD drive and another CD-RW drive?
You can ask me: "Why don´t you buy another motherboard ?". Because I have more 3 PCs and this one is a e-mail server and I will use it as a backup too !

Thanks

i810 chipset is usually paired with the ICH or ICH2 south bridge. Both supports at least 28-bit LBA (for HDD's up to 137gb in size). I give a 95% chance of it working right out of the box (just be sure to set the master/slave jumpers right!)

If the hard drive is detected in the BIOS as 32gb, or the bootup process "hangs", you need to update the BIOS. I'd say, this has a 4.9% chance of happening.

If the board boots, but Windows doesn't see the entire hard drive (Unlikely, I give this a 0.1% chance of happening), you will need to download the latest Intel Application Accelerator software off Intel.com. It will replace your storage drivers with updated Intel ones, and your hard drives will be properly recognized.
