How to kill Windows Messenger?

Even though I do not have Windows Messenger running, and I have its options set so that it is not loaded when Windows starts....
Every time I open an MS application, like Windows Explorer or Outlook, my friends tell me it show that I pop up online, even though I never have it running, nor is it showing up in the task bar.

How can I prevent this?

To turn off the Messenger Service.

1) Click on Control Pannel
2) Click on Admin. Tools
3) Click on Services
4) Find Messenger and Right click to get the Property menu.
5) Select Disable.

Spydermag, did you read the description for that service?
It says "This service is not related to Windows Messenger"

find and open sysoc.inf
remove the word "hide" (none of the commas) from the "msmsg" line.
save and go to add/remove windows components.
windows messenger will be listed - remove.

Windows Messenger changed their design in later builds of v4.7 (and v5.0 as well). It can now automatically run in the background as a process, and can be triggered to load by an integrated app.

Go to Tools->Options->Preferences and uncheck "Allow this program to run in the background".

Go to Tools->Options in Outlook and uncheck the option to automatically log you into Windoes Messenger.

The last (drastic) thing: Start->Control Panel->User Accounts->(name)->Manage my network passwords. Remove all passport accounts you have used to sign into Messenger. This will keep WinMsgr (and MsnMsgr) from automatically logging on, even if they auto-launch.

There is a registry entry you can create to stop the service from coming up. That is what I did. Just turn the following into a .reg file and add it to your registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client]
"PreventRun"=dword:00000001

Go to Start
Run
and copy and paste this line RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
and hit ok. it will start uninstalling from your PC.

Bye bye Windows Messenger.. and hope never to see you again.

this is the best way i have found to do it

My PC has a Norton Internet Security installed, which can monitor access from my PC to the internet.
The message tag "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe is getting access to the internet"
often appeared and annoyed me.
So I did uninstall it this way.

you can uninstall windows messenger - TEXT
Surely windows messenger was disappeared from Start Menu.
But why, the message remained appear.
Then I renamed the folder to MessengerSTOP.
alternately, i heard you can just rename the msmsgs.exe.
Now the message never come out.

A mere uninstall can't uninstall MS program.
