how to keep network connection 'plugged'?

whenever the client computer is switched off, the connection status on the server computer indicates that the network cable is unplugged. i remember that it used to be able to stay 'plugged' depsite the client computer being switched off.

i have tried to disable power management for the network cards on both computers - yet the problem remains.

any advice would be great. 🙂

If you use soft-off mode (which is what happens when you shut down an ATX system from the OS or with the front power button), then perhaps the status won't change. If you use the switch on the PSU (if the computer has one) then it will disconnect completely.

What difference does it make?

i have checked before to ensure that the client computer was not completely cut off of power. it exhibited the same behaviour.

if you're not planning to connect the port to anything and just want to get rid of the annoying network unplug icon from sys-tray... then do this:
1. get an RJ-45 connector
2. connect pin-1 to pin-3 and pin-2 to pin-6

That should do it.
