I just installed Windows XP Home. My internet connection is through cable modem and my ISP is Road Runner. I kept the cable connected to the back cable port during XP installation.

After completion of XP installation, I clicked on Internet Explorer to download Service Pack. But I don't have internet connection. Does XP recognize network automatically? Or must I enter certain information? Thanks.

Did xp install your drivers for your network card? Normally XP will detect an lan connection if the network card drivers have been installed.

No, there was no driver installation. Now I see what I did wrong. I did not install the motherboard driver yet. Thanks.

You need to install the drivers first. Windows has some drivers built in, but on some newer boards with fancy onboard NICs, windows dosent have those drivers.
