If this is already answered in another post please refer me. I am building a brand new machine. I have a win xp prof oem cd. I've never done a blank install always upgraded. What do I need to know, how do I go about it, etc. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Boot from the CD and hope your storage device is supported, otherwise you'll have to find a copy of the driver and put it on a floppy to give to the installation at the beginning.

The hard drive doesn't matter, the controller it's hooked up to does. And if it's a newer controller, no probably not.

Ok. would it be easier to buy a new copy of win xp or getting the driver isnt that complicated?

The only "newer" copy of XP that I know of is one with SP2 slipstreamed into it, MS doesn't do periodic updates of their consumer level OSes like they do with server. And there's no guarantee that the chipset on your new motherboard will even be supported by that since SP2's been out for a while.

I read under another post that you can burn the windows updates to a cd to install them rather than downloading them again. How would I go about doing that?

Slipstreaming, I believe most people use something like nLite to handle that for them.

It's things like this that make me chuckle whenever someone starts talking about how easy Windows is...

It is easy.

Try installing it. If it can't detect your drive, make a floppy for the SATA controller. Your motherboard maker should have one for download.

Takes two seconds.
