how to install new video card

hi, this may seem like the easiest thing in the world, but i need help on installing a new video card. my current card is a 6600gt, and i just bought the 7800gs.

the reason i need to know is because ive been thru a rough day trying to install the 7800gs. i plugged it in, installed drivers, and yet windows still wants me to install the driver for it. so instead, i now have my 6600gt bak in my computer, did a system restore to when none of my video drivers were messed aroudn with.

so now, can someone just give me a step by step procedure to install the video card? (im certain that i did it correctly the first time, but o well). thank you.

Just download and install the newest forceware drivers...

Did you uninstall the nvidia display drivers from the add/remove programs before you installed the new display drivers? Did you use a driver cleaning program if that didn't work?

hello, yes i did use a driver cleaning program. but i did not install the latest forceware. i am currently installing it now. after rebooting, should i uninstall the driver and then plug in my 7800gs?

also, after plugging in my 7800gs, should i run a like driver cleaner pro in safe mode, then reboot and install driver again? thanks for ur feedback.

Yeah, uninstall the driver, plug in your 7800gs, start up your system. Run driver cleaner, then install the new forceware drivers... Preferably the newer ones on guru3d that are WQHL certified 🙂.

You don't need to boot in safe mode to use the driver cleaners.

here is a list of drivers i found.

can u tell me which one to use? also, in the readme for driver cleaner, it tells you to run in safe mode, so im assuming that i should go along with the program's instruction?

nVidia:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove nvidia from add/remove programs
3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
5. Navigate to device manager->display adapters->highlight nVidia and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot
6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
8. Run Driver Cleaner
9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
10. Install the new drivers

i just installed the 84.21 driver. should i update it to 84.25 ?
this is the driver off guru

is it okay?
