How to Install Mozilla in Mandrake 8.1

I have the version that comes with the distribution, but I can not upgrade it to 9.8.

How do I go about installing the new version in Mandrake 8.1?

well I did what the readme said, but when I login as root and run the installer it installs fine. Then when I go to open up mozilla it still loads 9.4 and not 9.8.

Try uninstalling the previous mozilla. And make sure you are running the correct executable.

ok

anyway I found out where it did install the new version its in usr/local/lib/mozilla

however the old version is in usr/lib/mozilla

ok here is a super newbie question. How do I uninstall the old version?

Personally I prefer stuff like that in /usr/local/

"man rpm" 😉

Uninstall Mandrake's Mozilla RPMs. If you don't know how to do that, go read up some documents on how to use RPM to manage packages. An understanding of package management is a key admin skill for Linux.

If you don't mind the download time, I would try Mozilla's Red Hat 7.x RPMs. They work fine on SuSE Linux, and since Mandrake is a closer cousin to RH, they should work fine on any modern Mandrake as well (modern meaning 8.x).

There's nothing wrong w/ the Mozilla net installer, but RPMs are a snap to use when they work.

looks like I have a lot of reading up to do 😉 I don't mind though thats what learning is about.

I ran man rpm, but only got more confused 😀

thanks

Thats what man pages are there for. They support the alcohol industry (buy stock 😀). Just look for an uninstall option if you know what the Mandrake mozilla rpm is named. If you dont know what its named, figure out how to see all of the rpm packages you have installed and then look for the mozilla one. If I knew anything about rpms Id give you the commands with a decent explanation, but rpms are the biggest reason I wont use Mandrake or RH 😉

oh well I ran package manager in Mandrake and set it to remove the Mandrake RPMs but then the program crashed... wonderful 🙂

forget the GUI tool for now....like n0c said, look in the rpm man page for an uninstall option. i didnt use rpm very long so i dont remember (-u? -U? one is upgrade i think)

you dont need to read the man page word for word, just go to the "options" section where it lists all the command line options and what they do.
