These instructions are for beginners so excuse me if they are not appropriate to your level of expertise.
Usually the procedure is:
Change your system to standard vga:
-Double click My Computer
-Double click Control Panel
-Double click System
-Choose Device Manager Tab
-Click on + next to Display Adapters
-Highlight your Riva 128 device
-Click on Properties
-Choose driver tab
-Choose Update driver
-Click on Next
-Highlight Display a list...
-Click Next
-Highlight show all hardware
-Highlight Standard display types on the left and Standard Display Adapter (VGA) on the right
-Choose Next
-Let Windows finish and roboot.
-When Windows is rebooting, hold down the F8 key and choose safe mode from the list.
Removing the driver from Windows
When you are in safe mode,
-Double click My Computer
-Double click Control Panel
-Double click system
-Choose device manager tab
-Click on + next to Display Adapters
-Highlight your Riva 128 device
-Click remove
-When Windows ask you to restart say no.
Remove inf file:
-Double click My Computer
-Double click c
-Double click Windows
-Double click inf
-Double clic other
-Highlight the riva 128 .inf file if one is present
-Delete the riva 128 .inf file
-Close your My computer window
-Click start/shutdown and power off your computer.
Disabling video:
-Check your motherboard or system manual on how to disable the video
-If jumpers are needed, do it now when the system is off. Open your computer and make the adjustments.
-If it is a bios setting, power up the computer and hit the key to enter setup (usually, this is the delete key). Follow your manual on the setup screen and save your settings when your are done. If the disabling is through your bios, the system will reboot when you finish making the changes. Just hit the F8 key to enter safe mode. Then choose start/shutdown to power off your computer.
Physically installing your card:
-With system shut off insert your card
-Turn on your system
-Windows will detect a new hardware device and ask for drivers
-Place your cd drive in your cd-rom and point to the correct directory if windows cannot find the proper driver.
-Sometimes, you Windows disk is needed, so have the disk on hand.
-When Windows is done, you should get to your desktop in 640X480 mode.
Adjust your video
-Right click desktop
-Choose settings tab
-Choose the color setting on the left and screen area on the right.
-Click Ok.
-Windows will reboot
-Right click desktop
-Choose settings tab
-Choose advanced and adjust refresh rate or anyone setting you would prefer.
-Click ok
-Windows will reboot
Check for the latest drivers:
-Go to ATI's website and download the latest drivers
-Download them to your system
-Make sure you read the directions to see if there are any special installation steps that must be followed.
-After you follow their steps, reboot and you are finished.
