What MoBo do you have? If the 6600gt was pci-e then just put the new x1900gt in the pci-e x16 slot. Then delete all the nvidia drivers and install all the new ATi ones from the cd that came with the card. Then you just need to plug in the monitor.

Usually the best way is just to go to "Remove or add programs/files" and remove all nv drivers, I personally havn't used driver cleaner, but try it out and see if it works, its probably easier, so I'd be interested to see if it removes all the files automatically, so we don't have to do any manual deletion. All the hardware installation should be a breeze, just stick the card in the pci-e x16 slot firmly, attach the auxilary power cable and go install the drivers.

When I do this, I tend to remove the drivers from the first card with it still in use. Then I shut down and install the new card. Then install the new drivers.

I haven't had problems that I've needed to get fancier than that as far as removal tools and such.

This is my ritual:

1> Uninstall nvidia display drivers via Windows CP.

2> Reboot to Safe Mode.

3> Use Driver Cleaner Pro to clean nvidia drivers, then shut down and remove power cable.

4> Remove nvidia video card.

5> Insert ATi card.

6> Install ATi drivers.

7> Reboot.

8> Sell nvidia card on anandtech.
