download a program called Everest, keeps track of everything on your computer. Its not a nifty startup program that stays on your desktop though. http://www.lavalys.hu/index.php

My 6600gt has temp probes.
I think the temp should also be in your Nvidia driver CP.
Some brand cards have the temp sensor disabled in the BIOS. On my EVGA card, I had to patch the BIOS to enable it. The Gainward Expertool is nice too because it can change fan speed.
If you started with the Gigabyte CD drivers, V-Tune (right-click on the "G" in the system tray)
For passive, expect the temps to be a bit high, my passive 6800 idles at 76C and gets into the 8x C range under load, which is fine since the GPU is supposedly OK up to at least the high 90s.
