How to I determine which verson of Direct X I'm running?

Tools->DirectX

thanks. it says my version is DirectX 7.0 (4.07.00.0700)
It that the highest version to have, assuming one does not want to go to v.8? (is v.8 still cr@ppy?)

I know there is DirectX 7.0a, but I'm not sure if the "a" would appear in the version number or not.

I installed the 7.0 --> 7.0a patch adn now the version # shows 4.07.00.0716. In case anybody is in the same situation. Thanks for the help all.
