How to have two job at the same time for 3 months?

Here is the deal:

I work for Company B and they are merging with company C. To minimize risk they want to keep people till July 1st and they offer me $8k for it. After that they will lay off everyone in B as we are redundant.

My boss at B quit and found a job in company A, he bring me along and A offer me a job for a raise in both title and salary. The total deal is about 12k/yr more before bonus, an additional target bonus (performance based, most people get it 100%) of 9k/yr pro-rated. Needless to say I take it immediately.

Now, due to some legal procedures it may take me 3-4 week before I can start working for A. I have 160 hrs of PTO that I can use, so that's 2 months combined. I just need to be able to hang on for 1 more month to claim that 8k plus my salary in B.

The workload in B is very low, to a point that people only come in for 6-7 hr/day. Company A and B are next door, so if I come in once in a while I may be able to pull it off. I may have to resort to get myself fired and burn some bridges in B, or get a bad reputation if word spread around in A.

Any suggestion?

too much downside potential, you could get in serious trouble and end up spending some large $ for a lawyer

Sounds a bit too greedy to me. Take the 12k raise, be thankful and move on. Spoiling your rep and possibely screwing up the new job with company A is definately not worth 8k IMHO

Of course I want to do it legally, I knew one co-worker doing the same thing but he had a reputation of only showing up 3 hr / day prior to this, and now only show up during lunch time. I will not do this.

What I want to know is, if there is any way that I can get an unpaid leave approved for a good reason, and not being caught across the street next door. They will probably pro-rate the bonus, so 1 unpaid leave out of 6 months, still more than 6k.

No, there is no way to do this that is both legal and ethical-- unless, of course, you just lobby your new boss to let you start at a later date, or your new or old boss is OK with you spending ALL of your time at the other job.

If you were unethical, you could simply take a FMLA (family and medical leave act) leave of abscent from your old job by pretending you have a very sick grandmother to take care of. But you run the high risk of getting caught and ruining one, if not both, of your employment situations.

I think the odds are good for screwing up both deals, so take the new job and let the old one go.

Why risk a very good opportunity with the new company by trying to sneak around? That's a really bad idea. All it would take is one person still at company B to be angry that you are working two jobs at the same time to make an anonymous call to company A, and you're looking at NO jobs instead of two.

go to your boss in B/C, ask for two weeks off. then call at the end of that and make up an excuse why you need a third week off (all PTO). come in the 4th week, collect your bonus. 5th week, don't come in, don't call, get yourself fired from B/C, as this will let you out of any employment contracts with B/C. anytime after week 4 you can go ahead and start at A.

tell your boss to make your hire date in 3 months...he'll understand if he was your previous boss.
or ask for a signing bonus to make up for the $8k you will pass by going to A right away.

Make the new company match it if you can.

Oh - and you are probably not going to see that 8K. They're just using that as a carrot to keep people on.

Thanks for the suggestions, I should add a few notes:

If you get fired for work ethics reasons, you get no bonus.
The salary is already what I agreed to and after bargaining, I am already satisfied.
I will do nothing to ruin my reputation in A.

So, for 3 months I have 1 month of overhead, 1 month of PTO, and have to pull something out of my @SS for one month. How likely will my boss approve one month of unpaid leave? I don't want to go through Family Sick or those reasons. In fact I am running out of honest reasons other than praying for a massive layoff to come before the 2nd month's end and I automatically get the whole deal.

learn to use plural!!

Anyway, try negotiating the start date with company A? you might be honest with them and tell them you have some financial incentive, or you could try to give them a BS reason that doesnt sound as greedy (since the 12k/yr salary increase already is a financial incentive to leave B). If you havent already tried this, it's worth a shot. a couple of my friends who just found jobs negotiated their start date to be later than the companies initial offer. If you have already tried negotiating this, I would just hang on and see what happens, maybe some HR noob in B will fvck up the paperwork and slow down the starting process. good luck!

It's for times like these I am thankful that I have an evil twin. It just makes these kind of things so much easier...

You might get by if you ask for a sabbatical or any other type of unpaid leave, but if they decline it just walk.

Explain the situation to your new employer and ask if he can work with you on the start date.

Tell your boss you a greedy and to fire you.

Why would you risk a new job that pays $12k more for an $8k bonus...I think chances are you'll lose both jobs.
